The big day is almost here

We have all made it safely to Pietermaritzburg today. Tomorrow is race day and we all start together at 6:46. We expect the first guys to be in under 3 hours.

Sorry for not updating the blog the last couple of days, but we have been having troubles with the internet connection. As soon as we are back in civilization we will be putting up a few photos and reports of the days that we have missed.

In the meantime, we will keep on posting on our Facebook and Twitter pages during the day tomorrow.

Day 2

Day 2 started early again with 7 o'clock breakfast at Bassfeather Lodge just outside Reitz. Because of the bad road conditions in the area, we decided that it would be safer to start after the worst parts were over. Our mountain bikers, Pieter Kunz, Peter Loram and Alex took the scenic route and met up with us further along the way.

Unfortunately we didn't have a nice tail-wind like yesterday, but we were again blessed with sunny skies after the weather forecast didn't look to good earlier.

After riding for about an hour and a half, the MTB'ers again decided to split ways with us, and took Alan Walsh with them. The plan was to take a 30km shortcut, but they eventually rode about 15kms further than the rest of us. At one point they saw a sign saying 17km to go and an hour and a half later they saw the sign that said 16 km to go. Nevertheless, they had great fun on the mountain bikes today!

For the rest of us we continued in the windy weather and at one point caught up with another group that is also riding down to do the Amashova and the two groups rode together for a fair distance. Johan came out tops in a hotspot sprint against one of their best sprinters!!

We all made it safely to Harrismith this afternoon despite a couple of cronic combinitus sufferers...

Keep an eye on our Facebook page during the day for some photos.

Day 1

Day 1 started early with the pickup of all the participants at 5:00 at various locations. We went on to Blockhouse Wimpy for breakfast in pouring rain leaving Johannesburg. All the different weather reports indicated between 90 and 99% chances for rain in the Sasolburg and Reitz areas.

When we got to Blockhouse the rain had stopped and the sun showed it's face through the clouds. We finished breakfast and went on to the starting point outside Sasolburg. We got under way just after 8:00, and was pleasently surprised with the cloudless skies and relatively strong tail-wind.

We stopped at Heillbron for a quick snack after about 60km. We carried on and stopped for lunch just outside Petrus Steyn. We left Petrus Steyn and continued with a very pleasant tail-wind.

We finally arrived at our destination in Reitz covering 152km in 5 hours and 25 minutes of being on our bikes at an average of just under 29km/h.
